Hunting & Ranch Safety
Before hunting, make a clear plan and share it with someone at camp and someone at home. Let them know where you will be, when you expect to return, and how to reach you. If your plan changes, update someone before continuing.
When Tracking a Wounded Animal
- Wait at least 30 minutes before beginning the search or following a blood trail.
- If the trail crosses or may cross a property line, wait 2–4 hours before following it and make every effort to contact the neighboring landowner first.
- When possible, speak with neighboring property owners before the hunt so expectations and permission are clear ahead of time.
- If the landowner is unavailable and the situation requires guidance, contact the appropriate Game Warden or Sheriff’s Office before crossing onto neighboring property.
- Wear visible hunter orange, including a safety vest and cap, before entering or approaching neighboring property.
- Respect gates, roads, fences, livestock, wildlife, and all property boundaries.
- Recover and tag the animal, then return to your property promptly. Field dressing should be done on your own property.
